Retrofits August 20, 2025 8 min read

Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC) is consistently one of the most requested features we activate and retrofit at JLR Activations. It's easy to understand why - once you've experienced ACC on a long motorway journey, driving without it feels like a chore. But can it be added to a vehicle that didn't have it from the factory? The answer is: sometimes. Let's explore when, how, and at what cost.

Software Activation vs. Hardware Retrofit

The first question we always ask is: does your vehicle already have the radar sensor installed? On many JLR vehicles, particularly those built from 2019 onwards, the forward-facing radar sensor is installed as standard equipment even on base models. If the radar is present, ACC can often be activated through software alone - a simple, affordable procedure.

If the radar sensor is missing, a full hardware retrofit is required. This involves:

Compatibility by Model

Model Software Only? Hardware Required? Notes
Defender L663 2021+ often yes 2020 base models Radar commonly installed from 2021. Check VIN to confirm.
Range Rover L460 Most variants yes Rarely needed Radar standard on nearly all L460 builds.
RR Sport L461 Most variants yes Rarely needed Similar to L460 - radar widely installed.
Discovery L462 2020+ often yes 2017-2019 base models Facelift 2021+ more likely to have radar.
Velar L560 2019+ often yes 2017-2018 base models Radar became more common from 2019.
F-Pace X761 2020+ often yes 2016-2019 base models Facelift 2021+ almost always has radar.

The Installation Process

For vehicles requiring a full hardware retrofit, here's what the process looks like:

  1. VIN Check & Parts Order - We verify exact compatibility and order genuine JLR radar sensor, module, wiring, and brackets specific to your vehicle.
  2. Front End Disassembly - The front grille, bumper, and JLR badge area are carefully removed to access the radar mounting location.
  3. Radar Installation - The radar sensor is mounted at the factory-designated location with the correct bracket and alignment.
  4. Wiring Installation - We run the wiring harness following factory routing diagrams, connecting the radar to the ACC module and vehicle network.
  5. Steering Wheel Buttons - If your vehicle lacks ACC steering wheel controls, we install the correct button set.
  6. Software Activation - Using SDD/Pathfinder, we enable ACC in the vehicle configuration and calibrate the radar sensor.
  7. Testing - We test ACC at various speeds, verify Stop & Go functionality (if equipped), and confirm integration with other driver assistance systems.

Pricing Overview

Real Customer Experience

"I bought a 2021 Defender 110 S spec specifically because I knew ACC could be added later. JLR Activations confirmed the radar was already installed, activated it in under an hour, and now I have a £60k vehicle with £70k features for a fraction of the cost. The system works perfectly - I've done 2,000 motorway miles with it and it's transformed long drives." - David R., Defender L663 Owner

Stop & Go and Traffic Jam Assist

Basic ACC maintains speed and distance on the motorway. Stop & Go adds the ability to bring the vehicle to a complete stop in traffic and resume automatically. Traffic Jam Assist combines Stop & Go with gentle steering assistance in slow-moving traffic.

These advanced features require additional hardware beyond basic ACC:

Not all vehicles can support these advanced features even with a retrofit. We verify this during the VIN check.

Is It Worth It?

For anyone who does regular motorway driving, ACC is genuinely transformative. It reduces driver fatigue, maintains safer following distances, and makes long journeys significantly more relaxing. In our experience, customers who add ACC consistently rate it as their "best value" upgrade.

If your vehicle already has the radar sensor installed, the £349 software activation is an absolute no-brainer. For full hardware retrofits, the decision depends on your budget and how much motorway driving you do. Many customers tell us they wish they'd done it sooner.

DIY Warning

ACC retrofit is not a DIY project. The radar sensor requires precise alignment (measured in millimetres) to function correctly. Incorrect installation can cause the system to behave unpredictably or fail entirely. Always use a qualified JLR specialist with proper diagnostic equipment.
