Ambient interior lighting is one of the most popular feature activations we perform at JLR Activations. It's also one of the simplest - because on most MY23+ Jaguar Land Rover vehicles, the hardware is already installed from the factory. The LED strips are hidden behind the dashboard trim, door cards, and footwells. All that's missing is the software activation to bring them to life.
Which Vehicles Support It?
Ambient lighting activation is available on the following MY23+ vehicles with PIVI Pro or InControl Touch Pro systems:
- Range Rover Sport (L461) - 2023 onwards
- Range Rover Velar (L560) - 2023 facelift onwards
- Discovery (L462) - 2023 facelift onwards
- Defender (L663) - 2023.5 onwards (certain trim levels)
- New Range Rover (L460) - 2022 onwards (base models without the feature)
Compatibility depends on your specific build configuration. Some base-spec vehicles may not have the LED hardware installed. We always verify this through a VIN check before activation.
What You Get
Once activated, the ambient lighting system provides:

The Activation Process
Here's what happens when you book an ambient lighting activation with JLR Activations:
- VIN Check - We verify your vehicle has the LED hardware installed and confirm compatibility.
- Pre-Service Health Check - We run a full diagnostic scan to ensure all modules are healthy before making changes.
- Configuration Update - Using SDD or Pathfinder, we update the Body Control Module (BCM) and infotainment system configuration to enable ambient lighting.
- Testing - We test all zones, verify colour selection works through the touchscreen, and check intensity controls.
- Demonstration - We show you how to access the settings and configure the lighting to your preference.
The entire process takes approximately 45-60 minutes. No physical installation is required - it's purely a software configuration change.
Why Doesn't the Factory Enable It?
JLR uses ambient lighting as a feature differentiator between trim levels. SE and S models typically don't include it, while HSE and above do. However, the physical LED strips are often installed on all vehicles during production for manufacturing efficiency - they're simply not activated in software on lower trims. This is common practice across the automotive industry.
Configuration Tips
Once activated, you can configure ambient lighting through your vehicle's touchscreen:
- Navigate to Settings > Vehicle > Ambient Lighting (exact path varies by model)
- Select your preferred colour from the palette
- Adjust brightness to suit your preference - we recommend starting at 50% and adjusting from there
- If available, enable "Link to Drive Mode" for automatic colour changes
- Some models allow per-zone control - you can have different colours or intensities for dashboard vs. footwells
Troubleshooting Common Issues
Occasionally, customers report minor issues after activation. Here are the most common and how to resolve them:
- Lighting doesn't appear immediately - The system may need an ignition cycle. Turn the vehicle off, lock it, wait 2 minutes, then unlock and start again.
- Some zones don't light up - This usually indicates missing LED hardware in that specific zone. We can identify this during the VIN check.
- Colour doesn't match the screen selection - A module re-calibration usually resolves this. Contact us for a quick remote fix.
- Lighting turns off after SOTA update - Extremely rare, but if it happens, we offer free re-activation within our support period.

DIY Warning
We strongly advise against attempting to activate ambient lighting using non-standard tools or online "hacks". The BCM configuration is complex, and incorrect changes can cause cascading issues with other vehicle systems including windows, locks, and lighting. Always use a qualified JLR specialist with proper diagnostic equipment.
